Columbia University

The Foundation granted $60,000 to Columbia University, which is being used to establish the Turn the Corner Foundation Education Fund at Columbia. We are working with Psychiatrist and Lyme disease expert Dr. Brian Fallon, who is the Director of the Lyme Disease Research Program at the NYS Psychiatrist Institute.

The goal of this project is to train medical students, particularly 4th-year medical students, in the medical care of patients with Lyme disease. The rationale is that medical school is a key formative period for students, and focusing on Lyme disease at this point could be quite influential. The students receive training by physicians at Columbia as well as various Lyme-literate physicians in the community. As of December 2004, Dr. Fallon has chosen three students to participate in this program.

The fellowship has been able to continue since 2005 because of leftover funds.
