1. 2007 Grant Recipients
Turn the Corner Foundation Raises the Bar on Lyme Disease Research
with its 2007 Grant Recipients
Turn the Corner Foundation (TTC) has announced its 2007 grant recipients. The results of the groundbreaking research and programs that are being implemented with funding from TTC are certain to have a monumental impact in the Lyme disease community. All grants were awarded for a one-year period of time in four different states including California, Colorado, Maryland and New York. TTC is dedicated to the support of research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.
Programs funded by TTC address areas not currently covered by other Foundations. TTC has a three pronged approach in 2007 that consists of training health care professionals to treat patients, funding innovative research studies to advance the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease and funding research that explores ways to reduce the existence of Lyme disease in ticks.
TTC congratulates all of its 2007 grant recipients. The Foundation's continued commitment to funding cutting-edge research is evident in the studies selected and it looks forward to the results of this pioneering research. 2. The Physicians Training Program
Turn the Corner's Physicians Training Program Brings Lyme-Literate Health Care Professionals to Communities Nationwide
Turn the Corner (TTC) is committed to ensuring that people with Lyme disease no longer have to go through the painful process of being misdiagnosed and ineffectively treated due to the insufficient training of health care professionals in regard to tick-borne illnesses. With funding from TTC, health care professionals are now being trained around the world to recognize and treat this disease successfully; bringing relief to the many that may have lost hope for a pain-free future because of Lyme disease. The mission of TTC is to support research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.
TTC has formed countless programs that address Lyme disease education, diagnosis and treatment since its inception. These innovative programs have significantly impacted the Lyme disease community. An exemplary program that reflects this impact is the Physicians Training Program, which was created by TTC in collaboration with the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS).
- This groundbreaking program provides medical practitioners, from Naturopaths to MDs, the opportunity to study with a Lyme-literate health care professional.
- Through this experience, participants have developed the skills necessary to properly diagnose and treat Lyme disease. These professionals then bring this skill set back to their community in order to better treat their patients and give relief to the many who suffer from the debilitating effects of Lyme disease everyday.
- The Physicians Training Program is approximately two weeks long, and trainees become Lyme-literate through watching mentoring doctors in action with patients, reviewing different cases, and learning their individual approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

3. The Lyme Educational Awareness Development Series (LEADS)
Turn the Corner Provides Volunteer Opportunities for People across the Country to hold Lyme Disease Education Programs in their Community.
We are pleased to announce our newest national strategy in the war against Lyme disease: The Lyme Educational Awareness Development Series (LEADS). This program's design is inspired by our largely successful local Lyme Disease Educational Awareness Series, in which local New York City area community members opened up their homes, over the past few years, and held small fundraisers that highlighted the importance of understanding Lyme disease. Components of the local Lyme Disease Educational Awareness Series that led to its success were:
- The presence of an educational piece to address the latest developments in the world of Lyme disease and answer any questions
- A video that discussed Lyme disease and TTC's role in funding innovative research projects
- A fundraising component that has contributed to the dollars responsible for so many programs about the dangers of Lyme disease and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment
- The goals was to raise people's consciousness who attended our local programs on everything from how to check for ticks and remove them to how prevalent the disease has become around the world.
In envisioning how TTC could reach more people affected by Lyme disease across the country, we realized that we could easily make this program available to people around the world. This enables people in communities outside of New York City, where TTC is located, to:
- Host their own educational event
- Educate their community on Lyme disease
- Raise money for a cause that has meaning to them
TTC has created a tool kit that has detailed instructions on:
- Creating an event in your home
- Materials to distribute on Lyme disease to your guests during your event
- How to include and work with a Health Care Professional at your event
- How to publicize your event in your community
- How to raise funds at your event for Lyme disease research
One of the highlights of this program is that if a town qualifies, a physician from their community can participate in one of TTC's groundbreaking research programs. This extension of the program allows for the education to last a lifetime and for the programs we create to be sustainable. Most of all, we hope that through this program, people who have not had the opportunity to learn about Lyme disease will be able to receive the education they are entitled to and the opportunity to heal that they deserve.
