Turn the Corner Grants
Since the inception of the Foundation, we have made
a variety of grants to several organizations,
including the International Lyme and Associated
Diseases Society (ILADS), the Lyme
Disease Association (LDA) and Columbia
University.
We continue to closely monitor these programs and
are happy to report that they continue to be successful
in creating awareness and education to the general
public as well as physicians worldwide.
Recent developments in the programs we have funded
include a study by prominent Lyme disease researcher,
Alan MacDonald. Alan has
been studying DNA recovered from Alzheimer’s disease
tissue. His preliminary findings revealed
that brain tissue from seven of ten unrelated individuals
who had lived and died with Alzheimer’s disease
shared spirochetal (i.e. Lyme bacteria) DNA sequences
which appeared to have inserted themself (by
transfection) into the brains of the individuals
who subsequently died with Alzheimer’s disease.
Alan received a standing ovation at the recent ILADS/LDA
conference in Pennsylvania for these outstanding
research findings. We plan on continuing to
support Alan’s work in this area and are currently
funding phase 2 of this research through St.
Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown,
Long Island.
We are excited to expand our physicians' training
program to include even more trainees in 2006.
To date, dozens of doctors from all over the world
have participated the past two years in this unique
program. These doctors have already had the opportunity
to study under top Lyme-literate doctors, including
Dr. Ray Stricker, Dr. Joseph Burrascano, Jr., Dr.
Charles Ray Jones and others. We
look forward to being able to train more doctors
and educate them about Lyme disease so they can
in turn help treat Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses
in their home communities.
We have also granted funds to help major insurance
carriers understand the needs of Lyme patients.
The goal of this grant was to advance the understanding
of the diagnosis and treatment of chronic Lyme disease
for the medical staff of major medical insurance
companies in Pennsylvania.
