Lyme Disease Association
$80,000 was granted to the Lyme
Disease Association for Phase 1 of several projects
under the supervision of world-renowned Lyme disease
physician, Dr. Burrascano. This research was used
to implement data collection and analysis on all
aspects of clinical Lyme disease. Results from
this critical research will be a key element for
all treating physicians, and such information
will be published and disseminated worldwide.
These projects provide the foundation for Phase
2 of the program, which will help physicians worldwide
become Lyme disease literate.
In April of 2004, the Foundation granted an additional
$160,000 to the Lyme Disease Association. This
money will be used to fund Phase 2 of the data
project explained above and will be administered
by Dr. Burrascano. Objectives in this phase are
as follows:
- Continue building the current database (see
$80,000 grant above) to gather more data in
order to make it statistically valid;
- Use the data to prepare the next generation
database and standardized protocols;
- Standardize all exams, documentation, treatment
and data input;
- Enlist the aid of a computer specialist for
the next generation software and hardware; and
- Assemble a medical team to implement the
next generation software and hardware once completed.
In summary, Phase 2 will move this important
project forward in order to help physicians worldwide
become Lyme disease literate. This will support
quicker diagnoses and a better chance to fight
the disease before it affects people's lives.
